The most expensive habit in this hobby is buying singles the week a set releases. We can now put a number on it. Across the recent sets where our daily set-value history reaches back to the launch window, the road from launch prices to day ninety is a one-way slide, clustered between 12% and 32% down. The chase hits everyone at once, supply arrives by the caseload for weeks, and the auction clears lower every Sunday. Then packs stop being opened, and the story reverses.
Launch window to day 90, total tracked set value
| Set | Launch window | Day 90 | Change | Today |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Journey Together | $905 | $619 | -31.6% | $538 |
| Surging Sparks | $1,800 | $1,276 | -29.1% | $1,306 |
| Scarlet & Violet 151 | $1,314 | $1,043 | -20.6% | $2,059 |
| Obsidian Flames | $314 | $252 | -19.8% | $488 |
| Stellar Crown | $539 | $436 | -19.0% | $641 |
| Mega Evolution | $2,292 | $1,867 | -18.6% | $1,693 |
| White Flare | $3,105 | $2,675 | -13.8% | $4,005 |
| Fusion Strike | $1,656 | $1,439 | -13.1% | $2,359 |
| Shrouded Fable | $741 | $653 | -11.8% | $921 |
The bottom was the buy, four times out of five
Look at the last column. 151 fell from $1,314 to $1,043 and today sits at $2,059, nearly double its day-90 trough. Obsidian Flames bottomed at $252 and now reads $488. White Flare, Fusion Strike, Stellar Crown, Shrouded Fable: same shape. The launch decline is not a verdict on the set, it is a supply event, and once the print window closes the survivors reprice on demand alone. The exceptions are real too: Journey Together kept sliding after day 90 and Mega Evolution has not recovered yet. Day 90 is where the odds flip in your favor, not a guarantee.
The practical rule this tape supports is almost embarrassingly simple: the singles you want at launch, want them at Thanksgiving instead. On the sets above, waiting out the first quarter was worth between 12% and 32% on entry, and the recovery data says patience gave back nothing on the sets that mattered.
Daily set-value histories from Moonstone's set tracker (the same series shown on every set page), up to 551 days deep, read August 26, 2026. Launch window = the average of the first three daily points in a set's history; day 90 = the first point at least 90 days later; today = the latest point. Set totals sum tracked singles' market prices. Sets whose early history reflects tracker coverage growth rather than market movement were excluded as disclosed above. Not financial advice.
