The $0.69 Dark Ampharos and the $899.99 Zapdos: Two Lies on One Shelf

When a price site quotes a vintage card, that number is one printing row of a product that may hold several, and the row it picks is not always the card you mean. Across the 9,957 English cards where we hold per-printing prices as of September 7, 2026, exactly 18 are catalog-flagged as holo-only yet carry a plain Normal row beside the Holofoil. Sixteen of the eighteen are in Team Rocket Returns. And the errors those rows produce run in both directions at once.

Team Rocket Returns shipped two theme decks, James and Jessie, and deck copies of set holos exist in different foil states than their set versions. On TCGplayer those copies live as a Normal printing row on the same product as the set card. Dark Ampharos is the extreme: the Holofoil that IS the set card trades at $114.96, the deck copy row reads $0.69, and the product's own featured market figure was the $0.69. Any surface that trusts the featured figure quotes a $115 card at 69 cents. Kingdra does the same at $5 against a $52.79 Holofoil, a 10.6x gap.

The tell is the shape: a genuine deck copy is cheap in absolute terms and a small fraction of the holo. Both conditions matter, because the moment a Normal row carries real money, the story flips.

Every ex card is physically holographic, and TCGplayer prices 10 of the 16 EX era ex products we track under a single Holofoil row (two more, both POP Series promos, sit under a single Normal row). The remaining four, all in Team Rocket Returns, carry both rows, and there the vocabulary breaks. On Rocket's Zapdos ex the liquid market lives in the Normal row at $163.09 while the Holofoil row asks $899.99. On Rocket's Mewtwo ex the sides swap: the Holofoil row holds the $550 market and the Normal row asks $1,150. Rocket's Scizor ex reads $341.02 against a $600 ask, and Rocket's Snorlax ex sits nearly at parity, $459.99 against $510. The dear side of each pair is a thin ghost: a row kept alive by a handful of hopeful listings, not by sales.

A Normal row under $20 sitting below one fifth of the Holofoil is a deck copy priced like one, and the Holofoil is the card. A Normal row carrying real money splits on a second test: every genuine set-holo and deck-copy pair we measure sits within 3x of each other (Dark Slowking $95.94 against $42.30, Togetic $129.99 against $49.99), while ghost rows ask far outside it ($899.99 over $163.09 is 5.5x). So inside 3x the holo is the card, and beyond it the moneyed Normal row IS the market. This is now exactly how our own price resolver works: it resolves Dark Ampharos to $114.96 and Rocket's Zapdos ex to $163.09, not $899.99. A page headline can sit slightly above a resolved figure when the cheapest live listing does, which is the market being thin, not the resolver changing its mind. Population: the 9,957 English catalog cards holding per-printing TCGplayer rows in our September 7, 2026 price data, restricted to cards whose catalog printing flags record holo without normal, and whose product prices both a Holofoil and a plain Normal row above zero. That yields 18 cards. Printing identity comes from the TCGdex per-card variant flags. Market figures quoted for individual cards are this site's resolved canonical prices on the same date.
