The Pokémon Company has never published a printing schedule and never will. But printing is not invisible: while a set is on the presses, retail restocks cap its sealed price near MSRP, and the moment supply stops, the cap comes off. That single mechanism — visible in every Elite Trainer Box we track — lets us reconstruct the print clock from the outside. Below: what is actually documented about how printing works, a status model built on the retail-price fingerprint, and the calibration result that makes us trust it — every single Sword & Shield set, known to be out of print since that era ended, classifies OUT OF PRINT on market data alone.

What is documented

The print calendar nobody publishes — but everyone can see

Three things about Pokémon printing are on the public record. FIRST, total output: The Pokémon Company's own fiscal disclosures show production near one billion cards a year before 2020, 3.7 billion in fiscal 2020, nine billion in fiscal 2021 — an explicit doubling announced to fight the pandemic bubble and its scalpers — and roughly ten billion a year since, a level the company has confirmed represents maximum physical printing capacity, not a demand ceiling. SECOND, the era boundary is the master switch: Sword & Shield's final set shipped January 2023 and the era's promos ended that August; Scarlet & Violet's finale (Black Bolt & White Flare) shipped July 2025, and the Mega Evolution era took over that September. Sets print while their era is current, then wind down. THIRD, the wind-down has a rhythm: community and distributor reporting consistently describes major printing ending around the three-year mark per set — which puts the first Scarlet & Violet sets' final print windows in early 2027, with the restock waves we're seeing now as the last inventory push.

The model

Retail price is the print detector

Every mainline set ships an Elite Trainer Box at $49.99. While a set is being printed, big-box restocks keep that ETB purchasable near retail — arbitrage caps the price. When printing stops, the cap disappears. So the ratio of a set's cheapest standard ETB to its MSRP is a print-status sensor, and it calibrates against known truth almost perfectly: all seventeen Sword & Shield sets — out of print by definition since the era ended — trade at 2.3× retail or higher, while the Mega-era sets being freely restocked right now sit at 1.3–1.4×. Nothing out of print trades below 2.2×. Nothing freely printed trades above 1.6×. The gap between those bands IS the print clock.

What the clock says to do

THE BUY SIDE lives in the wind-down laggards. The Scarlet & Violet era is in its final print window, and its cheapest sets — Twilight Masquerade at 2.12×, Temporal Forces at 2.28× — carry the least scarcity premium of any set that will stop printing within a year. The Sword & Shield postmortem shows where OOP ratios settle: a floor of 2.3× even for the least-loved set, a median above 3×, and multiples of that wherever chase equity lives. A laggard at 2.1× cannot stay a laggard after the presses stop; the floor alone converges. THE SELL-OR-WAIT SIDE is the mirror image: Phantasmal Flames at 3.07× and Mega Evolution at 2.40× are trading like out-of-print sets WHILE THE PRESSES RUN. That premium is a supply failure, not scarcity — and supply failures on current sets get fixed. The company's documented playbook (the 2021 'maximum capacity' reprint campaign, the repeated Hidden Fates and 151 restock waves) is precisely to crush these premiums with reprints. Paying 3× retail for an actively-printed set is a bet that maximum capacity stays beaten — history prices that bet badly.

Production figures are from The Pokémon Company's annual fiscal disclosures as reported by Fortune, PokeBeach, PokeGuardian, and Kotaku: ~1B cards/yr pre-2020, 3.7B (FY2020), 9B (FY2021, an announced doubling with a public commitment to reprint 'at maximum capacity'), ~10.2B (2024), ~85B cumulative — with the ~10B level publicly characterized as maximum physical capacity. Era dates from Bulbapedia (Crown Zenith, Jan 2023, final SWSH special set; Black Bolt/White Flare, Jul 2025, final SV sets; Mega era from Sep 2025). The ~3-year per-set wind-down and early-2027 SV print-stop window reflect community and distributor reporting, not official statements, and are labeled accordingly. The status model uses each set's CHEAPEST standard Elite Trainer Box (Pokémon Center exclusives excluded) ÷ $49.99 MSRP, cross-checked against booster-bundle ÷ $26.94, from our tracked sealed universe as of July 28, 2026; thresholds calibrated on known ground truth (17/17 SWSH sets ≥2.3×, freely-stocked Mega sets ≤1.4×). Print status is INFERRED — TPCi publishes no schedules; treat statuses as probabilistic, and expect reprint waves to move current-era ratios abruptly. Nothing here is financial advice.
