Of the 892 energy products with a Near Mint asking price on a single printing, the middle one asks 79 cents. Four hundred and ninety seven of them ask less than a dollar. That is the reading most people expect, and we can take a second one off the same 892 rows: 162 of them ask $5 or more, 45 ask $20 or more, and the dearest asks $182.30. Both are true. They point in opposite directions because the question has a second question hiding under it.
The same 892 products, read two ways. Near Mint ask from condition_quotes, each product's own observation date, none later than 2026-10-11

We have measured the cheap end of this market twice and could not have written this either time. Bulk's Hidden Floor ranked the bottom decile of each era against the others. Which Pokemon Sets Are Mostly Bulk? put a sub-dollar share on 129 sets. Neither names a single energy card, and neither could, because the energy class is not a rarity and not a set. It is a value in TCGplayer's Card Type field. Ranking it means reading that field out of all 32,868 products we mirror and then setting it beside the per-condition price ladder, which says what a Near Mint copy asks and which printing the ask belongs to. That pairing is the new thing here. It is also what makes every row below checkable on a card page, one card at a time.
The money is in the door, and in the foil
Split the 892 by where the card was handed out and the two readings stop fighting. The 115 single-printing energy products in League & Championship Cards ask a median $6.09, and 64 of them ask $5 or more. The 111 from the TCGplayer Battle Academy boxes ask a median 14 cents, and none of them reaches a dollar; the dearest asks 34 cents. Same card class, 43.5 times the median. Now the part that ratio hides. The two baskets are not printed the same way: 76 of the 115 League products are quoted on a holofoil printing and 11 on a reverse holo, against 111 of 111 plain on the Battle Academy side. Hold the printing still and the gap shrinks hard. The 28 plain-printed League products ask a median 37 cents against Battle Academy's 14 cents, 2.6 times rather than 43.5, and not one of the 28 reaches $5. The 76 League holofoils are where the money actually is, at a median $8.97 with 57 of them clearing $5. So the channel counts because of what it chose to print, not because a league handout is scarce in itself. Nothing in either basket turns on the energy symbol.
That is also why the median says what it says. 501 of the 892, a clear majority, come from three product lines nobody buys for the energy: 202 from World Championship Decks, 188 from the trainer kits, 111 from the Battle Academy boxes. Ten of those 501 ask $5 or more. The class median is mostly a measurement of starter-product filler, which is a real fact about the catalog and a useless answer to a collector holding a stack of promos.
Median Near Mint ask by where the energy card came from
The handout story is not all of it, and the second half runs through the packs. The expansion bar on that chart is the residue of the bucket chain, which is why it holds 165 products and only 125 of them were ever sold in a retail booster. Those 125 ask a median $3.78, 4.8 times the class median, and 52 of them ask $5 or more. The 40 that pad the bucket have a median of 61 cents and come from seven provider groups that were never sold as retail boosters: nine from Trading Card Game Classic at a median 73 cents, eight from Mega Evolution Energies at 20 cents, eight from My First Battle at $1.11, five from Kalos Starter Set at $1.01, five from EX Battle Stadium at 26 cents, and five across POP Series 4 and POP Series 5, two and three of them, at a median $10.23. So the $3.04 bar understates the pack lift rather than inventing it. Inside the 125 that lift sits in one slot. The 46 carrying a Secret Rare or Hyper Rare label ask a median $10.17, against $2.43 across the other 79. Fairy Energy (Burning Shadows) is the dearest of the 125 at $95.73, ahead of Darkness Energy (HeartGold SoulSilver) at $60.97. So an energy card gets expensive two ways. Somebody had to hand it to you, or the set printed one in a slot nobody opens packs hoping for.
Share of each channel's energy products asking $5 or more
The 22 Professor Program Promos energy cards are the only bucket where every product clears $5, and at a median $17.90 they are dearer than the League stamps. They are also one of the three smallest buckets on the chart, 22 products where the World Championship decks hold 202, so read that bar as a small and uniformly scarce group rather than as the top of a ranking.

| $57.50 | Metal Energy 95/95 (Play! Pokemon) | League & Championship Cards | 2026-10-11 |
| $54.33 | Lightning Energy (WotC 2002 League Promo), product 127502, no card page on this site | League & Championship Cards | 2026-10-11 |
Row fifteen has no link because it has no page. TCGplayer product 127502, the WotC 2002 league Lightning Energy, asks $54.33 and has no row in our catalog, so /card/enx-127502 returns a 404. We left it in the table rather than promoting row sixteen, because the fifteenth dearest of the 892 having no page on a site that ranks energy cards is the more useful fact.
Row three you cannot check on our own site either, and the reason matters more than the row. The Staff-stamped Double Colorless Energy 90/108 (North America Championships) is recorded in condition_quotes at $140.00, observed 2026-10-01, and it is not one table's artefact: nm_history's newest reading for that product is $140.00 on 2026-10-01, and price_history carries $140.00 as late as 2026-10-12. The card page serves $4.16. Its own payload carries a divergence of -0.97029, which is exactly what our divergence rule, our figure less the reference over the reference, returns for $4.16 against $140.00, so the field is pointing at this disagreement and the page is publishing the lower side of it. Until that is resolved, treat the $140.00 as a quote from the ask tape with the date attached and not as our published price for the card.
Eighteen of the top 25 come from a channel you could not buy into: league handouts, championship staff and winner stamps, prize packs. The other seven fall in the expansion bucket, and six of those seven really did come out of a retail booster. Five of the seven carry a Secret Rare or Hyper Rare label. Two do not. Double Rainbow Energy (POP Series 5) asks $44.98 and is one of the 40 the bucket holds only by default, because POP Series packs were handed out through Pokemon Organized Play rather than sold. That leaves Darkness Energy (HeartGold SoulSilver) at $60.97, a plain common from a 2010 expansion, as the one row in the top 25 that nothing above explains.
What these numbers cannot do
Every figure in this note is an ask. condition_quotes stores what a Near Mint copy is listed at, with the date the provider last observed it, not what anyone paid. The observation dates span 2026-01-19 to 2026-10-11 across 84 distinct days, with 993 of the 1,257 priced products seen on or after 2026-10-05. That means the recent end of the table is a current ask and the stale end, including the $99.99 Winner-stamped Darkness Energy (Special) 93/109 last seen on 2026-08-08, is a two-month-old one. No row is missing a date, and every date is printed beside its figure.
396 of the 1,257 priced energy products have no card page keyed to their TCGplayer product id, so a reader cannot check them here at all. The gaps are concentrated: 89 of the 123 in League & Championship Cards, 86 of 202 in World Championship Decks, all 40 in the provider's Scarlet & Violet Energies group, all 37 in the provider's original Battle Academy group, all 37 in Battle Academy 2022, 24 of 84 in Prize Pack Series Cards. Those 396 hold 16.0% of the $5,455.62 asked across all 1,257 priced products, and 51 of them ask $5 or more. The medians above are therefore computed on the market as the provider describes it, not on what our catalog can show you, and the difference is a coverage gap rather than a set of zeroes.
The Card Type filter is a floor on the energy universe and not a census. 21 products whose names contain Energy carry no Card Type at all, and 18 of them are real cards, including Team Rocket's Energy in Ascended Heroes, quoted at 23 cents on the ask tape on 2026-10-06 against 18 cents on its own page, and the eight Mega Evolution basics in both their plain and Cosmos Holo printings. All 18 ask under $1.20, with a median of 23 cents, so adding them pulls the class median down rather than up. The other three are not cards: two sealed energy boxes and a code card. Every superlative in this note is therefore about the dearest energy product the Card Type field can see.
Two more exclusions, both of which would have changed the answer if we had ignored them. 365 of the 1,257 priced products sit on products the quote tape marks as carrying more than one printing, and a holo ask stapled to a plain card is not a price for either, so they are out of every ranked row and every median here; the Basic energy median moves from $0.48 on the 650 single-printing products to $0.38 when those are pooled back in. And of the 1,257 priced products, 1,162 quote both the Near Mint and the Lightly Played rung, of which 287 list the Lightly Played copy at or above the Near Mint one, which is incoherent and is the shape of a one-listing market. They stay in every median, because a median taken after deleting the awkward tail is not a median.
Read against Turso production on 2026-10-12. Source for identity: tcgcsv_products, 32,868 rows, one row per TCGplayer product, read in a single pass filtered to extended LIKE '%Energy%' OR name LIKE '%Energy%', which returned 9,396 rows; Card Type was parsed out of the extended JSON in the script, never in SQL. 1,288 products carry an energy Card Type across 25 provider spellings (Basic 828, Special 323, bare Energy 137); 21 further products named Energy carry a null Card Type and are outside the population. Those 1,288 ids were joined to condition_quotes by exact primary key in chunks of 400, returning 4,805 quote rows across five rungs (NM 1,257, LP 1,176, MP 1,002, HP 714, DMG 656). Only the NM rung is treated as a price. EXCLUSIONS: 31 products with no Near Mint quote (22 Basic, 8 Special, 1 unlabelled); no Near Mint quote was at or below zero. 365 of the remaining 1,257 are excluded from every median and every ranked row for sitting on a product with more than one printing, leaving 892, of which 650 are Basic and 168 Special. Near Mint as_of spans 2026-01-19 to 2026-10-11 across 84 distinct dates, 993 of 1,257 on or after 2026-10-05, none missing. Channel buckets are the TCGplayer group name, with the three Battle Academy groups folded together and the eleven trainer kit groups folded together; the 892 split 165 regular expansions, 202 World Championship Decks, 188 trainer kits, 115 League & Championship Cards, 111 Battle Academy, 48 Prize Pack Series, 22 Professor Program Promos, 21 other non-expansion, 20 Scarlet & Violet Energies. The expansion-set bucket is defined by exclusion, and 40 of its 165 products are not pack-opened expansions at all: 9 Trading Card Game Classic, 8 MEE Mega Evolution Energies, 8 My First Battle, 5 Kalos Starter Set, 5 EX Battle Stadium, 2 POP Series 4 and 3 POP Series 5, seven provider groups in all. Dropping only the 5 POP Series products moves that bucket's median from $3.04 to $2.70 across 160; dropping all 40 moves it to $3.78 across 125 with 52 at $5 or more, so the impurity understated the lift rather than manufacturing it. The 125 were checked group by group: they span 41 provider groups and every one of the 41 is an expansion whose packs were sold at retail. The rarity split in the body is computed on those 125, where the 46 Secret or Hyper Rare products ask a median $10.17 against $2.43 across the other 79. The $140.00 row was crossed against two further tapes read by exact key: nm_history's newest reading for product 174486 is $140.00 on 2026-10-01 and price_history carries $140.00 on 2026-10-12. tcgcsv_prices was NOT read for it: that table is 909,020 rows with no product_id index, so the read was refused on the cost rule rather than run as a scan. PRINTING MIX, because a ratio must name the same printing on both sides: the 115 League & Championship products are 76 Holofoil, 11 Reverse Holofoil and 28 Normal, and the 111 Battle Academy products are 111 Normal. The 43.5x is therefore a channel-and-finish figure, not a same-printing one. Held to Normal on both sides it is $0.37 across 28 against $0.14 across 111, 2.6x; the 76 League Holofoils alone median $8.97 with 57 at $5 or more. Page existence is a lookup on the indexed cards.tcg_id, 861 of 1,257 matched. Medians are the upper middle value on an even sample. Every number here is printed by the figures scripts: indexed primary-key reads plus the single tcgcsv_products pass.
