July 2026 was a stock-picker's month. Measured across our whole tracked universe, nothing happened: the median raw single rose 2.4%, the median graded card FELL 2%, and sealed product moved one basis point. But underneath the flat medians, the winners' column ran 50–170% in thirty days — and the winners cluster somewhere unfashionable: Black & White and Diamond & Pearl era cards, the hobby's decade-old middle child, plus a handful of vintage PSA 9s. When the index is flat and the dispersion is this wide, selection is the entire game.

The scoreboard

Three asset classes, one flat month — on the surface

We score all three the same way. Raw singles: median of the last 30 days of daily market prices against the 30 days before (420 cards with full history, $10 floor). Slabs: median of actual dated PSA sold comps in each window, at least five sales per window per grade ($40 floor). Sealed: our tracked 30-day price change across 1,274 products ($50 floor). The medians say 'quiet month.' The distribution says otherwise: seven in ten raw singles rose while six in ten slabs fell — money rotated out of the graded middle and into select raw cards.

The BW/DP rotation: +50% months in a forgotten era

Eleven of our top twenty raw movers come from the 2007–2014 Black & White and Diamond & Pearl window — an era that spent a decade priced like bulk because it was neither vintage enough for nostalgia nor modern enough for hits. Black Star promos from that window led the whole market: Riolu BW33 nearly tripled, and Eevee and Mew BW promos both added 50%+. The pattern rhymes with what our 30-year study found about the 2002–2007 print trough: scarcity created by inattention eventually gets repriced, and the repricing is fast.

A falling market with violent exceptions

The graded market's median move was −2%, and only 39% of qualified grade-rows rose — yet the exceptions were dramatic, and they were CHEAP GRADES OF EXPENSIVE CARDS: vintage PSA 9s. Shining Celebi 9s cleared 45% higher month over month; Jolteon Gold Star and Triumphant Gengar 9s added a third or more. This is precisely the pattern our grade-ladder study flagged — when the 10 is unbuyable, demand concentrates one rung down. Two extreme readings (a four-digit percentage on a Neo Genesis Lugia 9 and a +787% on a Dragon-era Charizard 10) were excluded as comp-mixing artifacts rather than reported as gains — thin windows can mix mislabeled listings into a median.

Dead flat — and that's the story

Across 1,274 tracked sealed products above $50, the median 30-day move was one basis point, and the single best performer managed +6.6%. After the multi-year run our 30-year study documented (19–80% CAGRs on flagship boxes), a month where sealed does NOTHING while raw singles re-rate is a rotation signal worth respecting: the marginal collector dollar bought cards, not boxes, in July.

Graded: medians of individual dated PSA sold comps per grade per window, ≥5 sales in each window, $40 floor (216 qualifying grade-rows); two extreme readings excluded as comp-mixing artifacts (thin windows can mix mislabeled listings). Sealed: tracked 30-day price change across 1,274 products above $50. Prices on linked product pages update continuously and will differ from the captured medians. Nothing here is financial advice.
