Destined Rivals Costs 3.7x Journey Together, and It Is Not Because It Is More Top-Heavy

Journey Together went on sale on March 28, 2025 and Destined Rivals nine weeks later on May 30. Both are Scarlet and Violet sets, both have a complete catalog on our tape from their own release day, and both are measured the same way here: the sum of every card we price in the set. Destined Rivals reads $1,750.98 and Journey Together $478.17, a ratio of 3.66 to 1. The reasonable first guess is that one huge card is doing the work in Destined Rivals. The data says something more boring and more useful: the gap is roughly the same size at every level of both sets, which means the difference is not concentration risk, it is demand.

So the headline instinct is right about the chase. Team Rocket's Mewtwo ex is 4.37 times Lillie's Clefairy ex, and the Destined Rivals second card, Cynthia's Garchomp ex at $230.39, is worth more than the top two Journey Together cards put together. Where the instinct goes wrong is in what that implies about the rest of the set.

Read down the ratio column. If Destined Rivals were a one-card set with a long worthless tail, the top-five ratio would be far above the whole-set ratio and the tail ratio far below it. Instead the widest gap, 3.96x, is in the cards outside the top ten, and the narrowest, 2.98x, is in cards six to ten. The premium is spread across the set rather than parked on the chase, and the concentration figures say the same thing: 58.3% against 57.2% in the top five, and 72.2% against 74.3% in the top ten, where Journey Together is actually the more concentrated of the two.

Which gives the cleanest way to say how far apart these two sets are. The 246 Destined Rivals cards outside its top ten are worth $487.23. Every priced card in Journey Together, all 198 of them including Lillie's Clefairy ex, is worth $478.17. The part of Destined Rivals nobody talks about is worth slightly more than the whole of the other set.

Journey Together set its highest post-release price on the third day it was on sale and has never come back to it in the 535 days since. The single reading at or above its release price is the baseline reading itself. Destined Rivals took 122 days to peak, spent roughly half of its recorded life at or above what it opened at, and was still above the release price as recently as July 26, 2026. They bottomed within two days of each other in January, which is the one thing the two sets clearly share, and which suggests the January low was a market event rather than a set event.

That is the substance behind the price gap. It is not that Destined Rivals had a bigger card. It is that Destined Rivals held a bid and Journey Together did not, and the bid shows up at every level of the set at once. Our daily card-level tape runs 22 days. Over that window Destined Rivals had 65 lines priced at $1 or more on the first day, of which 18 rose, 2 were flat and 45 fell. Journey Together had 35 such lines, of which 10 rose, 1 was flat and 24 fell. Both sets are selling off in much the same proportion, at roughly 70% of lines down. Two of those lines, one in each set, have no entry in our card catalog and so appear in the counts but not in the table below; the Journey Together one ran from $4.58 to $6.50, which makes it the largest gainer in either set.

On boxes the gap is 1.80x rather than 3.66x, which is what you would expect if singles carry the set premium and sealed carries mostly print run. One caution on the Journey Together box: the plain booster box is down 19.9% over 30 days while the Enhanced Booster Box at $252.17 is up 1.2% and the Half Booster Box at $333.33 is unchanged. Three SKUs of the same product disagreeing that sharply usually means a listing mix moved rather than the market, so the 19.9% should not be leaned on.

The cleanest single comparison in the whole piece is the chase against the box it comes out of. Team Rocket's Mewtwo ex at $445.87 is 1.03 Destined Rivals booster boxes. Lillie's Clefairy ex at $101.93 is 0.43 of a Journey Together one. That is what a higher chase value actually buys you, and it is also the risk: the Destined Rivals index moves when one card moves, because Team Rocket's Mewtwo ex is 25.5% of the set by itself.

Set value is the sum of the market price of every card we track in a set. Both sets qualify for release-date analysis because our series begins before each set's release, so the catalog was complete when the measurement window opened. All launch figures use the first reading dated on or after the published release date, never the first reading in the series, which for both sets is a pre-release stub. Slice values are derived from the recorded top-five and top-ten concentration ratios applied to set value; the five top cards listed individually sum to $1,020.48 against $1,020.64 derived, a 0.02% difference from rounding.
