Every era of collecting elects one card to be its unit of account, the card everyone prices everything else against. This era elected Umbreon VMAX from Evolving Skies, and because it sits at the center of the market it sits at the center of every dataset we run. That makes it the perfect subject for something we have never done: a full dossier, one card read through six independent instruments.
The Umbreon file, August 2026
| Instrument | Reading | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| Raw market | $2,329 | a four-figure card you can pull from a pack |
| PSA 10 median | $4,300 on 354 verified sales | the deepest graded tape we track |
| Sales velocity | 36.8 PSA 10 sales/week | third most liquid slab in the ledger |
| Registry | pop 30,777, still growing | supply arrives every single week |
| Gem rate | 69.5% | a 10 is the EXPECTED outcome |
| Grading EV | +$1,271 net at a $20 fee | the ladder still pays |
| Rip cost | $67.92 per pack | the worst lottery ticket in the game |
The paradox: everything about this card should contradict
A card with 30,777 slabs and a 69.5% gem rate should not hold $4,300 in a 10. Our Population Growth Tax study shows registry growth eating premiums across the modern market, and Umbreon's registry adds hundreds of slabs weekly. It holds anyway because demand is deeper than supply is fast: 36.8 verified sales a week means the market absorbs every new gem and asks for more. That is what being the era's reserve currency means, and it is measurable: in our Liquidity Ledger, the only slabs faster are Mega Charizard X ex and Lugia V, both younger and cheaper.
The rip economics complete the picture. Evolving Skies boxes trade at $2,445 because of this one card, which makes its packs $67.92 lottery tickets chasing a jackpot the box price already contains. Our set simulation puts the chase-to-pack ratio at 33x, among the worst value tickets we track. Nobody should rip for this card, and the box price is the market agreeing: sealed Evolving Skies is priced as an Umbreon derivative, not as packs.
All figures from Moonstone recorded data as of August 28, 2026: raw market from the daily TCGplayer sync; PSA 10 median and sample from verified eBay solds; velocity from sample-size deltas in the graded snapshot ledger; population and gem rate from daily PSA registry snapshots; grading EV from the registry-average outcome model disclosed in our ROI study; pack price from tracked booster-box listings.
