Buying raw, the top of our English catalogue is Lugia from Aquapolis and Torchic ☆, both asking $4,500.00 as of September 22, 2026. Selling graded, the top is Gengar EX at a $30,895.00 PSA 10 median on 11 verified sales. Compare the top 25 of each list and exactly one card is on both.
The most expensive cards to buy
This is the list people mean when they search. It is the highest price a seller is currently asking for a near-mint ungraded copy, across all 21,661 English printings our tape prices. It is dominated by early-2000s ultra rares: gold stars, crystal cards and the e-Card secret rares, pulled at long odds from sets that stopped printing two decades ago.

Note how thin the top is. Only 45 of the 21,661 priced English printings ask $1,000 or more, which is 0.21 percent, and only eight ask $2,000 or more. Below that the ladder falls away fast: 134 printings ask $500 or more, 359 ask $250 or more and 942 ask $100 or more, which is 4.35 percent of the catalogue.
The most expensive cards to sell
Now ask what the market pays rather than what it asks. Our graded tape holds medians of verified completed sales, and for a top-of-market list we restrict it twice: at least ten verified sales behind the median, and a median that stayed within ten percent of itself on every day we recorded it. That leaves 1,314 English printings from the 4,694 carrying any PSA 10 figure, and this is their top.

The two lists are not the same list
Compare the top 25 of each and one card appears on both: Shining Charizard from Neo Destiny. Widen to the top 100 of each and the overlap is 21 cards, so roughly four fifths of the most expensive cards to buy are not the most expensive cards to sell, and vice versa.
The mechanism is condition. A card that is cheap raw and enormous in a 10 is a card the market expects to be damaged. Rayquaza ex δ asks $287.33 ungraded and its PSA 10 median is $15,377.40, and that is not a grading premium so much as a statement that almost no surviving copy is clean. A card that is dear raw and moderate graded, like Umbreon VMAX at $2,283.14 raw against a $4,031.00 PSA 10 median on 509 sales, is a modern card where clean copies are plentiful and the raw price already reflects demand.
What a 10 typically adds, and to what
Across the 2,908 English printings that carry both a PSA 10 median on at least ten sales and a raw ask of a dollar or more, the median card's PSA 10 sells for 11.68x its raw ask. The ratio is not constant. Among cards asking $200 or more, it drops to 5.95 times, because an expensive raw card is already being priced on scarcity. Among cards asking under $20, it rises to 14.76 times, because the raw price is a floor and the grade is doing all the work.
That is the practical reading of this whole piece. The expensive raw list is a scarcity list and the expensive graded list is a condition list, and they answer different questions. Population: 21,661 English printings holding a TCGplayer product id and a recorded price. Raw asks are the most recent daily market price recorded per product in our price_history table, dated September 22, 2026 for all but six of the 21,661, whose last reading is a few days older, and are listing prices rather than completed sales. Graded figures are medians of verified completed sales from our graded_snapshots table read on September 22, 2026. The graded list is restricted to printings whose PSA 10 median rests on at least ten verified sales and whose median stayed within ten percent of itself across every day we recorded it; 4,694 English printings carry a PSA 10 median at all, 2,973 of those rest on ten or more sales, and 1,314 clear both bars. Of those 1,314, 173 carry a median of $1,000 or more, 45 of $5,000 or more, 16 of $10,000 or more and 4 of $20,000 or more. Medians use the upper-middle value on even samples.
