How Much Is a Charizard Card Worth?

There are 114 English Charizard printings in our daily price tape, spread across 54 sets, and the middle one asks $72.18 as of September 22, 2026. Four ask $1,000 or more and five ask under $5, so how much a Charizard card is worth depends entirely on which one is in your hand. This piece walks the whole ladder: the raw asks band by band, the 1999 Base Set card on its own, and what a PSA 10 does to each number.

Charizard has been printed, reprinted, promoted and secret-rared for twenty-seven years, and the volume shows up in the prices. Only 14 of the 114 printings ask $500 or more. Just over half ask less than $100. The card that sits exactly at the median is Charizard, an SM-era black star promo numbered SM226, at $72.18.

Read the quartiles rather than the headline. A quarter of all Charizard printings ask $19.04 or less. Three quarters ask $249.95 or less. The ninetieth percentile is $599.34. The dearest Charizard ask we record is $1,501.23, which is a long way from the numbers people quote at each other on forums.

Charizard from Base Set is the card most people mean. Our tape records $919.98 for the holofoil on September 22, 2026. That is an ask, the price a seller is currently listing at, not a completed sale. In graded form we hold a PSA 9 median of $1,500.00 built on 19 verified sales, and no recorded PSA 10 sale at all inside our measurement window. That absence is not a zero. PSA 10 copies of this card exist and trade; we simply did not record one, and quoting a number we do not hold would be worse than saying so.

The same artwork has been reissued four more times in English, and the reissues are where the interesting arithmetic is. The 2021 Celebrations: Classic Collection copy asks $162.87, about 18 percent of the 1999 card, and its graded tape rests on 844 verified PSA 9 sales against 19 for the original. You are choosing between a scarce card with a thin sales record and a plentiful card with a thick one.

Rank all 114 by ask and the 1999 card comes fifth. The four above it are a mid-2010s Mega, a 2002 shining, a 2013 secret rare and a 2006 gold star, which is not the shortlist most people would name.

Ninety-one of the 114 printings carry at least one recorded PSA 10 sold median in our tape. Across those 91, the median PSA 10 sells for 10.22x the raw ask of the same card. That multiple is not evenly spread. Across the ten printings from 2010 or earlier that carry a PSA 10 median it runs to a median of 26x, because a clean survivor of that age is genuinely rare. The smallest multiples of all, under 2x, sit on modern chase cards that were opened by the crate: two Champion's Path Charizards and two shiny-vault ones. At the bottom of the ladder sit Charizard Spirit Link at $0.35, a trainer card that carries the name, the 2024 McDonald's Charizard at $2.59, the Pokémon GO Charizard at $4.03, the Vivid Voltage Charizard at $4.20 and a promo Charizard ex at $4.80. If somebody has told you that any Charizard is worth money, these five are the counterexample, and there are 24 more between $5 and $20.

ONE: identify the printing before you identify the value. Set symbol, card number and foil treatment settle it, and they are the difference between $0.35 and $1,501.23. Our set pages carry the full checklist for each one.

TWO: separate the ask from the sale. Every dollar figure in the raw tables above is what a seller wants today. The graded figures are medians of completed sales. Those are different questions and we label them differently throughout, for the reasons set out in Which Market Price?.

THREE: do not assume grading adds the multiple you read somewhere. The typical Charizard PSA 10 trades at 10.22x its raw ask, but the grading fee, the postage and the chance of a 9 all come out of that, and The Grading Tax puts real numbers on where the line falls. Asks are the most recent daily market price recorded for each printing in our price_history table, dated September 22, 2026 for 113 of the 114; the Dragon Frontiers Charizard ☆ δ was last quoted on September 19. They are listing prices, not completed sales. Graded figures are medians of verified completed sales from our graded_snapshots table, read on September 22, 2026, with the sample size printed beside every one. Medians use the upper-middle value on even samples. The steady-median table is restricted to printings whose PSA 10 median stayed within ten percent of itself across every day we recorded, because a median that moves several hundred percent in a week is reporting a change in which sales are in view.
